Hummit

Hummit is a free web / mobile app that helps you identify songs. You do this in Hummit by recording an audio sample and then letting other hummiteers listen to see if they recognise it.

I first started developing Hummit in 2017 when I took a gap year from university. I initially started working on Hummit for many reasons:

  • to learn new skills
  • thought it would be cool to develop a mobile app
  • was looking for a new project in my spare time
  • to impress future employers
  • to help people identify songs in their head

Hummit took approxiamtely a year of development in my spare time before it was finished. It involved learning many new skills: Xamarin, XAML, mobile app design, publishing to app stores and building for iOS.

Prior to developing Hummit, I had no experience with using or developing Apple devices.

Hummit was originally for Android, iOS, Windows, Amazon and Alexa devices. Hummit was initially removed from the Apple store as it seemed unreasonable to pay the $99/year Apple developer fee to release a new version of a free app. It was then removed from the Google Play Store for maintainability as Google require mobile apps to have regular updates. I then chose to remove for Windows, Amazon and Alexa devices as they were largely unused. At the same time, the Facebook and Instagram accounts for Hummit were deleted, so that I could focus on Hummit's Twitter account.

On 22/11/2020 a web based portal was released so that Hummiteers no longer had to download the app. The portal has all the features that the mobile app did (with a few extra ones) and it much easier to maintain from a developer perspective.
